Ranks in the Nigerian Navy are in two categories – ranks for commissioned officers and ranks for non-commissioned officer (NCO).
A Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) in the Nigerian Navy is one who was enlisted through the Nigerian Navy Basic Training School – NNBTS RECRUITMENT and has not earned a commission.
Non-Commissioned Officers are the “muscle” of the Navy and they work their way up by promotion through the non-commissioned ranks.

A Commissioned Naval officer holds higher rank than all Non-Commissioned officers. They have more authority, responsibilities, and are paid more.
Commissioned officers are the “brain” of the Navy consisting of highly educated officers who are usually NDA graduands or regular Degree holders recruited via DIRECT SHORT SERVICE COMMISSION (DSSC).
They earn their commissions without going through the Non-Commissioned ranks.

1. Admiral of the Fleet
Admiral of the Fleet is the real highest rank in the Nigerian Navy for commissioned officers.
It is honorary and usually not awarded, especially in a democracy because the rank is higher than the “President” who is supposed to be the highest authority in the country.
The rank of Admiral of the Fleet in Nigerian Navy is equivalent to the rank of “Field Marshal” in Nigerian Army and “Marshal of the Airforce” in Nigerian Airforce.
2. Admiral (Adm)
This rank is above Vice Admiral but below Admiral of the Fleet in the Nigerian Navy and represented with this badges.
Admirals are also called 4-star officers
Admiral is “technically” the highest rank in the Nigerian Navy since the only rank superior to it is barely awarded.
The rank of Admiral in Nigerian Navy is equivalent to “General” in Nigerian Army and “Air Chief Marshal” in Nigerian Airforce.

There are seven (7) ranks in the Nigerian Navy for Non-Commissioned officers.
Non-Commissioned officers in the Nigerian Navy do NOT have badges or insignias but their ranks and salary are as follows.
1. Warrant Chief Petty Officer
Warrant Chief Petty Officer is the highest rank in Nigerian Navy for Non-Commissioned officers.
Depending on the category or department, this rank oversees and supervises the duties of every other non-commissioned Naval officer.
Warrant Chief Petty Officers are paid about ₦120,853 per month (1.4 million Naira yearly).
2. Chief Petty Officer
This rank is above Petty Officer but below Warrant Chief Petty Officer in Nigerian Navy.
Depending on the category or department, most duties of Chief Petty Officers is to see that those under his supervision are working effectively and efficiently. (S)he is the functionary that ensures work is done well and fast.
Chief Petty Officers are paid about ₦90,852 per month (1.09 million Naira yearly).
3. Petty Officer
This rank is above Leading Rating but below Chief Petty Officer in Nigerian Navy.
Depending on the category or department, the main duty of Petty Officers is to evaluate and prioritize division jobs daily.
Petty Officers are paid about ₦80,852 per month (970K Naira yearly).
4. Leading Rating
This rank is above Able Rating but below Petty Officer in Nigerian Navy.
Depending on the category, the main duty of Leading Rating officers is to ensure that order is preserved among the other ratings of any branch or department whether on duty or not, who hold a rate junior to them.
Leading Ratings are paid about ₦70,855 per month (850K Naira yearly).
5. Able Rating
This rank is above Ordinary Rating but below Leading Rating in Nigerian Navy.
Depending on the category or department, the main duties of Able Rating officers involve deck and accommodation patrols, being on the lookout or assisting an officer watch, mooring and un-mooring vessel ports, securing cargo and cleaning and maintaining the port.
Able Ratings are paid about ₦50,855 per month (610K Naira yearly).
6. Ordinary Rating
Ordinary Rating is the lowest rank in Nigerian Navy for Non-Commissioned officers.
It is attained upon graduation from the 6-month Naval Training program and the salary is about ₦45,854 per month (550K Naira yearly).
Depending on the category or department you were trained for, most duties of Ordinary Rating include; cleaning and collecting of garbage, painting and polishing of ship brightwork, repair and maintenance of the deck.
7. Trainee
These are applicants who had been shortlisted and undergoing the 6-month Nigerian Navy Basic Training.
Naval Trainees are NOT paid a dime until they successfully graduate to the rank of Ordinary Rating.
Aside from these salaries, all officers of the Nigerian Navy also enjoy other benefits and allowances such as healthcare, travel and security allowances, etc.
