The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) classify teachers under four categories based on their certification.
- Category ‘A’ (PhD holders)
- Category ‘B’ (Masters Degree holders)
- Category ‘C’ (Bachelor’s Degree holders)
- Category ‘D’ (NCE holders)
The main topics in the syllabus for TRCN exam are the same for all categories of teachers. However, the level of understanding and analysis required advance gradually from Category D to Category A.
Categories of TRCN syllabus

Category A — for Teachers with Doctorate Degree
These are teachers with Doctorate degree (PhD) in Education or PhD in other fields but with a teaching qualification such as PGDE, PDE, or PDDE.

Conclusion
Teachers on a higher category are to cover both the TRCN exam syllabus for their Category and categories under them.
This means that if you fall under category C, you should study according to the TRCN syllabus of both your category ‘C’ and the lower category ‘D’.
If you fall under category B, study for both your category ‘B’ and for lower categories ‘C’ and ‘D’.
If you fall under A, study for categories A, B, C and D.
